11 "Faux Pas" That Are Actually Acceptable To Use With Your Upvc Door Handles
Types of UPVC Door Handles
If your upvc door handle needs replacing it's essential to choose the correct replacement for your home. A locksmith can provide and install high-security uPVC door handles with extra security features.
The most important measurements you should take are the measurement A (also known as PZ) and the length of the backplate. Make sure to check these measurements to ensure your new uPVC handle will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a rigid bar that pivots around a central point (known as a the fulcrum). When you apply a force to the end of the lever, it is likely to cause it to turn the fulcrum to the direction of the force applied. This rotation multiplies your force and allows you to lift or move things that normally require more force to lift.
The distance between the fulcrum and the place where you apply the force determines how far the lever can move. This is called the mechanical advantage. The more the lever extends more, the greater the mechanical benefit. You can calculate the mechanical advantage by dividing distance from fulcrum point to the point you apply force by the distance between fulcrum point and the end of lever.
Levers can produce different effects based on the method by which the force is applied. A lever of class 2, for example, has a tendency of turning in the opposite direction when an force of the effort is applied. The forces generated when you push on the handle of a front door can produce rotational effects that are similar to those.
However, levers don't create energy. Levers increase the force by converting small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into greater amounts of force applied over shorter distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and transport large quantities of cargo. The principle of the lever is also used in everyday tools like crowbars. Hammer claws, fishing rods and your own legs, as you stand on your car's hand brake.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles, also referred to as upvc door handles feature levers on both sides to operate the multipoint locks. These are available in various finishes and variations and can be used on a variety of materials, including UPVC doors, Aluminium doors & Timber Doors. They are sold in pairs for the doors, both exterior and interior, with spindles and screws included. They are available in hand and unhandled versions to accommodate different types of users.
They are commonly used in new constructions and can be used to replace the existing doors made of upvc. The levers are lowered to open all the multipoint locks, and the key is turned to close or unlock the door. They offer a little more security than traditional lever door handles because locking can only be done through the inside with keys.
They are not as secure as a cylinder bolt however they are an affordable option to provide extra home security. The only disadvantage is that they do not offer the same level of security like a cylinder bolt and therefore won't prevent access from outside if the door has been left open.
We stock a large number of lever pad upvc handles that are manufactured by leading manufacturers in the field. They will therefore be constructed with top quality components. They are also generally supplied with a manufacturer's warranty.
Typically, these will be designed to work with a 92mm lock or the replacement version of this known as a Paddock lock. They will have a 92mm cylinder centre on the inside and 62mm on the exterior and come with two spindle followers. Some are fitted with the back plate while others can be removed to allow for different fixing centres.
Lever/Snib
Lever latches, the simplest of door handles are commonly used. Pressing down on the lever is a simple mechanism that opens inside the door to keep it closed. It can also be locked with the use of a key. Some lever privacy handles work similar to the doorknob, but with a second snib, similar to the doorknob.
A snib button can be very beneficial, especially in homes where it's essential to protect privacy or ensure security. You can use the snib button to block your partner from entering until they are prepared. This kind of handle is also popular in doors that are inside, such as bedrooms, where you might want to restrict access from outside.
In some instances the snib button can cause problems, particularly when you have doors and locks that are distorted. If the snib button was accidentally pressed or by someone who is not familiar with it, the door could be slammed and you locked out. Usually, you can still be able to get in by knocking the door frame or letterbox, however this isn't the best option.
If your uPVC has a snib we recommend replacing it with a smart lock from the E-LOK 7 Series. These can be retrofitted over double turn pull handle kits and come with cover plates to hide existing holes, to make it a seamless installation. The E-LOK app can be used to unlock doors with RFID cards or mechanical key. Passcodes are also offered for convenience and security. The system has been tested to 200k cycles to ensure durability. The handles themselves are made with a solid-metal construction and are BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 for corrosion resistance.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This is a very popular handle style for front doors. It has the benefit of preventing the door from opening from outside without a key if the lock is not deadlocked. This is accomplished by using an external handle that is shaped like a pad that locks into the gap between the handle and lock case.
This handle is designed to be used with uPVC multipoint locks that use a split spindle mechanism. This kind of operation requires that the lever handle and the external pad handle are both fitted to the same lock case. This can be a simple switch from the current uPVC handles, but it might also involve changing the lock case or a new set of handle furniture to allow for this additional functionality.
These levers/movable pad door handles are suitable for uPVC doors and feature a maintenance free slide bearing, fixing lugs and spring cassettes provided. They feature a euro-style cut out and can be fitted to a wide range of uPVC and timber doors.
